Porsche Taycan Turbo S equals Bugatti Veyron, beats 911 Turbo S in performance test

Porsche’s first electric car, the Taycan, is yet to arrive in Australia, but it’s already promising to be one of the fastest cars on the market if new performance stats are anything to go by.

In a recent performance test, American automotive magazine Car and Driver found the flagship 2020 Taycan Turbo S was the third quickest car it had ever tested, placing it in the same league as some of the world’s top-performing supercars.

In their instrumented test, C&D found the Turbo S – the most powerful of the three Taycan models – was able to reach a speed of 60mph (just over 96km/h) in just 2.4 seconds.

That makes the Taycan Turbo S’s performance equal to that of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 and 0.1 seconds quicker than Porsche’s 911 Turbo S (991), according to previous testing conducted by C&D.

Still, the Taycan Turbo S sits behind C&D‘s test of the Lamborghini Huracán Performante (60 mph in 2.3 seconds) and the Porsche 918 Spyder (60 mph in 2.2 seconds).

While the US publication had not conducted any recent tests on the Taycan Turbo S’s main competitor, the Tesla Model S Performance, Tesla claims a 0-100km/h time of 2.6 seconds.

Comparatively, Porsche’s official performance figures for the Taycan Turbo S state a 0-100km/h time of 2.8 seconds, 0.2 seconds behind that of the Model S Performance.

The most affordable model in the range, the Porsche Taycan 4S, has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 4.0 seconds.

Porsche claims the Turbo S produces 460kW of power (or up to 560kW on ‘overboost’) and 1050Nm of torque.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found the Taycan Turbo S to have a range of 192 miles (308 kilometres), with Porsche claiming a top speed of 260km/h.

The Taycan Turbo S is expected to arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2020, with pricing estimated to be around the $350,000 mark and the Taycan 4S expected to start at around $200,000.
